Hello Fresh: Juicy Lucy Burger

9:21 AM

The final Hello Fresh recipe was juicy lucy burgers with tomato-red onion jam and charred romaine. This was the first recipe that I screwed up. We ended up throwing away one of the patties and microwave salvaging the other. Let's jump right in...

The Contents:

Ingredients: burger blend, shredded cheddar, plum tomato, red onion, garlic, balsamic vinegar, romaine heart, mayo, ketchup, and brioche buns.

Preparation:

The first step was to mince the garlic, chop the tomato and onion, set aside two pieces of romaine, and quarter the rest. Out of habit (I guess?) I cut off the very end of the romaine. This was a mistake and thus, the romaine wouldn't hold together like it was supposed to. Mistake #1.

Char the romaine, wishing you hadn't cut off the ends:

Make the tomato-onion jam by sauteing the onion, sugar, balsamic, and chopped tomato.

Assemble the burgers by shaping the meat into extra-flat patties. Place half of the cheddar in the center, then fold up the beef to create a new patty. Gently flatten. I'm not sure if this was Mistake #2, but since my patties later went on to explode on the stove, I'm guessing I didn't seal my burgers well enough.

Exploding patties, still rare inside :(

Make the garlic-balsamic dressing by whisking together mayo, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper:

Toast the buns. This almost became a horrible Mistake #3. The oven beeped the same time the microwave beeped to signal that the burgers were done. I was removing the burgers from the stove and turned off the oven timer. Two minutes later I remembered that I hadn't taken out the buns. I'm lucky they weren't completely burnt!

Final Product:

Filters make food look beautiful. Wouldn't you agree?

The Verdict:

I was all over the place with this one. First of all, the burgers were really pink inside when the directions said they would be done. The burger that exploded lost almost all of its cheese. We felt it wasn't worth salvaging and we tossed it. The second burger still had some cheese, so I threw it in the microwave to get rid of the pink. I plated it like normal and sadly ate my creation. I burnt the hell out of my finger when the lava cheese spilled out of the patty. I was so OVER this recipe.

The romaine wasn't good at all. I should have eaten it raw so it would've had some crunch. The rest of the meal wasn't bad. I like that I'm starting to realize how I could alter the recipes for my husband and I. I no longer want any wilty charred veggies. Charred corn was pretty epic, but charred romaine and wilty spinach (upcoming post!) is awful.
